Folk On!

Mumford and sons: “just a poor man’s Pogues”?

Yesterday was a major milestone for me – after all these years of writing songs and hiding them away from the world, I finally went public and played an entire set of my own songs. Yep: thirty minutes of original material, most of which has never been heard by any ears other than my own.

About bleedin’ time too.

One of the biggest “hits” of the set was Folk On, a song I wrote a couple of years ago especially for a gig I was playing on St Patrick’s Night. Here’s a “live” version I did with drummer Si Blades, some time last year.

And, just for the hell of it, here’s the lyrics so you can all sing along:-

When I was a much younger man I learned to play guitar
For fourty quid I’d play a gig in any pub or bar
A folk-song singing soul was I, although it’s time had gone
While other souls played rock n roll I vowed to still folk on

“Folk on!” say I with all my heart, “folk on!” with all my love
“Folk on!” say I until I die when I will just folk off
Folk on! Folk off! Folk on! Folk off!
“Folk on!” say I until I die when I will just folk off

My love for folk it first began when I was only little
My uncle had a violin, he’d let me have a fiddle
My friends at school wore denims and they grew their hair quite long
I wore an Arran jumper, grew a beard, and said “folk on!”

“Folk on!” say I with all my heart, “folk on!” with all my love
“Folk on!” say I until I die when I will just folk off
Folk on! Folk off! Folk on! Folk off!
“Folk on!” say I until I die when I will just folk off

The folk song of the sixties, they became my songs of choice
I sang the songs of Dylan only in a less whiny voice
I never was in fashion but I still stuck to me guns
While other punks played jazz or funk I vowed to still folk on

“Folk on!” say I with all my heart, “folk on!” with all my love
“Folk on!” say I until I die when I will just folk off
Folk on! Folk off! Folk on! Folk off!
“Folk on!” say I until I die when I will just folk off

Now Friday night was folk club night, folk music was my world
I never went to discos and I never talked to girls
I’d sup me beer and stroke me beard and sing until the dawn
My friends would all be folking off, I’d still be folking on

“Folk on!” say I with all my heart, “folk on!” with all my love
“Folk on!” say I until I die when I will just folk off
Folk on! Folk off! Folk on! Folk off!
“Folk on!” say I until I die when I will just folk off

Now things have come full circle and folk music’s back in vogue
You know that band Mumford & Sons? They’re just a poor man’s Pogues
So I’ll stand here and drink me beer and strut me folky stuff
And if you do not like it well then you can just folk off

“Folk on!” say I with all my heart, “folk on!” with all my love
“Folk on!” say I until I die when I will just folk off
Folk on! Folk off! Folk on! Folk off!
“Folk on!” say I until I die when I will just folk off

Now the night is over and my song is almost done
I thank you all for coming, and say to you “folk on!”
I hope I leave you wanting more, but me, I’ve had enough
And I’ve a message here from management… it says:
“Will you kindly please folk off!”
